Start Your Matcha Tour of Japan

For anyone obsessed with premium Japanese matcha, passionate about green tea, and planning a trip to Japan, a trip to Kyoto is vital – and a visit to the Tsujiri Uji Main Store should be a priority. Tsujiri is one of Japan’s most iconic matcha producers, established in the 1800s by Riemon Tsuji, and known for its expertly crafted matcha made with tea leaves grown in the famous Uji, Kyoto region. Whether you’re sipping pure stone-milled matcha or enjoying it in dessert form, every Tsujiri product reflects the company’s deep roots in Uji’s tea-making traditions, and their Uji flagship store offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Japanese tea culture. Enjoy the most traditional cups of classic matcha, exclusive matcha sweets, and plenty of matcha souvenirs.

Note: Terms like “ceremonial grade” and “culinary grade” aren’t used in Japan – they were invented as marketing terms in the West! Instead, we recommend asking the shop staff to help you find the perfect matcha based on flavor profile and intended use!
Visiting the Tsujiri Uji Main Store

Located just five minutes from JR Uji Station, Tsujiri’s flagship store is a quiet, elegantly designed space with a wide range of premium matcha, gyokuro teas, and sweets. Inside, the Tsujiri teahouse offers guests the chance to relax with expertly prepared matcha and decadent desserts, enjoying the tranquil garden view. A little removed from the busiest shrines, temples, and narrow alleys in the heart of Kyoto, this is a perfect spot to decompress during your Kyoto trip, and enjoy small-town Japan with a fantastic cup of tea.

Must-Try Matcha Desserts and Souvenirs

The star of the teahouse menu is the Matcha ni Somaru Parfait (抹茶に染まるパフェ), which features indulgent layers of Tsujiri’s matcha ice cream, red bean paste, jelly, and chewy mochi-like “shiratama” pearls. Another popular option, however, is the Tsujiri Plate with Usucha Matcha (辻利プレート お薄つき), which offers a sampling of sweets that are also available for purchase as souvenirs!

In the shop, you’ll find seven varieties of stone-milled Uji matcha, as well as premium gyokuro green tea, and a selection of popular matcha-flavored souvenirs. Try the buttery Kyo-Langue Matcha Cookies filled with matcha chocolate, or the melt-resistant Yaki Chocolate made with matcha and hojicha.

To drink, the Uji O-Koi Matcha Latte Powder makes matcha convenient, since you can just add hot water for a rich matcha drink, but the tea bag canisters (filled with hojicha or sencha) are decorated with Uji illustrations to make them particularly appealing as gifts!
