Starting Strong with Japanese Favorites

1. Misaki Ichiba (三崎市場)

Restaurants and food courts are often found on the basement floor of Japanese malls and department stores, and JOINUS is no different. This is where you'll find Misaki Ichiba, a shop that specializes in "kaisen-don" (海鮮丼), or fish and seafood rice bowls!
  • All of the fish you find here will be delicious, but the star of the show is their fresh raw maguro (tuna), which is caught nearby, and purchased right from the fish markets. The fresh fish's quality is a luxury we don't always find outside of Japan, so it's worth indulging in while you're here, and the hearty chunks make for a satisfying meal.

2. Negishi (ねぎし)

This restaurant specializes in one of Japan's more unusual specialties. Alongside with classic meal sides of rice, pickled vegetables, and soup, Negishi offers entrees of grilled beef tongue! The large grill is situated in an open kitchen, so you can see the chefs at work expertly preparing your meal.
  • Some travelers avoid beef tongue just because they worry the price will be too high. When you think about it, there is far less tongue-meat available than other beef. Not to worry, though, Negishi makes it easy to sample this tender meat, with reasonable tongue dishes available from about 1,000 yen.
  • The tender meat is carefully plated, and ready to eat.

3. Hakata Tempura Takao (博多天ぷらたかお)

This tempura joint hails from Fukuoka, on Japan's southern island of Kyushu. Delicately battered and fried to crispy perfection, the tempura here will make your mouth water.
  • You can certainly get a quick meal of ten-don (天丼), tempura rice bowl, at Hakata Tempura Takao. You'll walk away quite satisfied. But the real treat here is the fresh vegetables and seafood, which can all be ordered one piece at a time. Getting each piece fresh from the hot oil, piping hot and satisfyingly crispy, is a true luxury experience. From around 1,000 yen, a bounty of delicious tempura made with all kinds of ingredients is yours to enjoy.
  • Staff will carefully prepare each morsel one by one.

4. Yokohama Nakaya (横浜なかや)

If you've been in Japan for a bit and you want to try something new, this restaurant is all about miso nikomi udon. The dish has a base of miso-flavored stew, a rich and flavorful broth, with a healthy pile of thick udon noodles. Rounded out with vegetables cooked to perfection in the savory broth, it's both very Japanese, and also a little different from what travelers often try on a trip to Japan. You can also opt for kishimen, a similar dish originating from Nagoya, with wider flatter noodles.
  • The dish itself can be had for an affordable 800 yen, and made into a set with rice and pickled vegetables for an additional cost. You can also order a raw egg along with the dish. If you're thinking "now what do I do with a raw egg on my platter?" they have a few serving suggestions! You can dip each item in the raw egg just before eating, like you might do when eating sukiyaki. You can also mix it into your warm rice, making it the classic Japanese "tamagokake gohen" (卵かけご飯). Or, if you want the egg well-cooked, plop it right into the hot soup! It'll add an extra delicious richness to the soup.
  • This miso stew is popular with visitors from all over.

The Relaxed Atmosphere of JOINUS's Cafe Eateries

5. Wired Cafe (ワイヤードカフェ)

One look at the interior of this brunch cafe, and you can tell it's a little different from the restaurants we've been talking about so far. Wired Cafe has bold retro furnishings and soft lighting, making it a pretty cool place to chill out when you need a break from all your souvenir shopping. They even have a variety of cocktails to go with their food.
  • Of course it's a great place to hang out with friends, but it's also a comfortable space to sit alone! Sometimes solo travelers have a hard time finding a dinner spot where it's easy to spend time by themselves, but Wired Cafe is great for that purpose. A variety of magazines, focusing on different topics and kinds of writing, are put on display around the seating area. They're not just for decoration, you're welcome to leaf through them while you're there. There are also plentiful outlets for charging your phone or laptop. (They even carefully curate the music in the cafe to create a cool environment!)
  • One-plate brunch set, and a cranberry-grapefruit juice. (1,380 yen)

6. Nana's Green Tea

On the third floor of the building, you'll find this green-tea-themed cafe and restaurant. For when you want a simple, light meal, you can try Nana's ochazuke (お茶漬け), a traditional Japanese rice dish that's topped with hot tea! For days when we're feeling a little decadent, they also have parfaits piled with layers of matcha-flavored treats.
  • This store location also has a special themed concept, which is that it's a ~bamboo forest~. The many bamboo poles arranged around the eating space are really atmospheric! It's themed dining, without the kitsch.

There's also a little souvenir corner inside the cafe, where you can buy Japanese-style gifts to bring home. The most common souvenirs in Japan are always food, so of course Nana's Green Tea has cookies and traditional warabi mochi to give to your friends.
