NEWoMan TAKANAWA: A New Shopping Destination in Central Tokyo
Run by the same company as Shinjuku’s popular LUMINE malls, NEWoMan TAKANAWA is the latest new opening inside Takanawa Gateway City, a massive multi-purpose complex on the JR Yamanote Line. Designed to be a “City Within a City,” this new Japanese mall aims to create a place for visitors to shop, eat, relax, and have fun in one conveniently connected indoor space. Of the three NEWoMan TAKANAWA buildings, the North and South are currently open, while the “MIMURE” annex is scheduled to open in spring 2026. But the mall feels far from unfinished in late 2025, with 165 brands and a number of special pop-ups bringing the total of shops up to 177! If you’re looking to shop, or just searching for a rainy day destination in Tokyo, this new mall is worth a visit.

LUFTBAUM
On the 28th and 29th floors of the North building, LUFTBAUM is LUMINE’s first-ever “floating green space,” created to feel like a forest in the sky. Spanning over 1,000 m² and perched 150 m above ground, the indoor garden features more than 50 native Japanese plant varieties, from cherry blossoms and hydrangeas to Japanese maple trees.
Beyond the greenery, you’ll also find restaurants and art installations, including the “Garden of Spirit,” celebrating social diversity. It’s a lovely place to relax and enjoy Japan’s seasonality, without worrying about the weather.
BUNKITSU TOKYO
On the 5th floor of the South Building, BUNKITSU TOKYO is a next-generation bookstore covering about 3,300 m² with their collection of close to 100,000 books! More than a bookstore, it’s a creative hub with a cafe, kids’ corners, and event areas, inviting readers of all ages to come spend some time among the books.
NEWoMan Service Counter
The Service Counter on the 4th floor of the South Building is more than just a help desk! Locals (and travelers who find their suitcase a little overfull) will be interested to find the anewloop counter, where you can bring unwanted clothes, bags, shoes, or other fashion items to be reused or recycled instead of tossed out. (This is surprisingly rare to find in Japan!) GBase SUPPORT offers multilingual support using AI, so visitors from all over the world can find help in whichever language is easiest.

SHIKOKU

Kagawa Prefecture is on the northern part of the island of Shikoku, facing Japan's main island and the Seto Inland Sea. It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

OKINAWA

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
