Yokoamicho Park is a quiet Tokyo oasis nestled in the Sumida ward, within walking distance of Ryogoku’s famous sumo wrestling arena, and museums like the Sumida Hokusai Museum and Edo-Tokyo Museum. A popular place for families with children and anyone looking for some greenery in the big city, the park is full of small gardens and steeped in history, with museums and memorials commemorating the Great Kanto Earthquake. The very way to enjoy the park, however, is to plan a trip in the early autumn, when the cool breeze brings clusters of vivid red spider lilies.
Spider Lily Season: September~October
From mid‑September to early October, Yokoamicho Park’s spider lily garden bursts into bloom, surrounding a giant, picturesque stone garden lantern with frills of red petals. In Japan, the spider lily is an iconic herald of Japan’s autumn season, promising cool weather after months of heat and humidity. The Japanese name for spider lily, “higanbana” (彼岸花), literally means “autumnal equinox flower,” making these blooms an especially meaningful part of the seasonal rhythm of Tokyo.
Visit in the morning or late afternoon to catch the soft autumn light illuminating the “higanbana,” and feel free to set up camp and enjoy the atmosphere. Unlike some of Japan’s bigger flower gardens and fields, Yokoamicho Park is quiet and uncrowded even at the peak of the season, so you have all the time in the world to admire the flowers – you can even set up a tripod if you like.
Other Yokoamicho Park Attractions
While the autumn spider lily bloom might be the Japankuru team’s favorite thing at Yokoamicho Park, there are other reasons to visit throughout the year. Following the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the entire neighborhood was engulfed in flames, and the park (then more of a vacant lot) served as an evacuation site. Unfortunately, not even the park was spared in its entirety – strong winds carried sparks, which burst into flame when caught on the furniture and other belongings of the refugee crowds, claiming the lives of many who had arrived in search of safety.
This tragic story is remembered at the Great Kanto Earthquake Memorial Museum, where exhibits include historic photographs and artifacts from the fire to tell the story of the disaster in a way that is both fascinating and heart-wrenching. Nearby, the large Memorial Hall offers a solemn space for those wishing to pay their respects.
Plan Your Visit to the Park
Yokoamicho Station is easily accessible via Ryogoku Station, just 2 minutes on foot from the Oedo Line or 7 from the JR station, which makes it a great spot to visit in combination with some of Ryogoku’s more famous destinations. Take a break at the park after admiring the elegant Japanese blockprints at the Sumida Hokusai Museum, or relax after getting all fired up by the matches at the Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena. You can even head across the intersection to check out the ever-changing selection of katanas at the Japanese Sword Museum, and enjoy the seasonal beauty of the museum’s own traditional Japanese garden, called the Former Yasuda Garden!

Kagawa Prefecture is on the northern part of the island of Shikoku, facing Japan's main island and the Seto Inland Sea. It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

Located in the most southwestern part of Japan, Kyushu (九州) is an island of 7 prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima. The island's unique culture has been influenced by Chinese and Dutch trade, along with missionaries coming in through Nagasaki's port. Modern-day travelers love the lush natural scenery and fresh food, plus the natural hot springs found all throughout the area (thanks to volcanic activity)!

Fukuoka Prefecture has the highest population on the southern island of Kyushu, with two major cities: Fukuoka and Kitakyushu. Thanks to growing transportation networks, Fukuoka is more accessible than ever, and so are the many local attractions. On top of historical spots like Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, travelers shouldn't miss Fukuoka's food scene, with motsu nabe (offal hotpot), mentaiko (spicy cod roe), and famous Hakata ramen―best eaten from a food stall in the Nakasu area of Hakata. Plus, it's full of all sorts of destinations for travelers, like trendy shopping centers, and the beautiful nature of Itoshima and Yanagawa.

Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima. Kagoshima might be found on the very southernmost tip of the southern island of Kyushu, but there's plenty to see.

OKINAWA

The island chain of Okinawa (沖縄) makes up the southernmost tip of Japan, which is why it's also the most tropical area in the country. Thanks to a history of independence and totally distinct political and cultural events, Okinawa has a unique culture, and remnants of the Ryukyu Kingdom are still visible all over the islands. Food, language, traditional dress, it's all a little different! It's also said to be the birthplace of karate.
