Of course, for the countless international travelers planning to plan their whole trip schedule around cherry blossom season, every update is precious information. When will Japan’s cherry blossoms be in bloom in 2026? And where should you aim to see them? Find the latest information below.

Japanese Cherry Blossom FAQ

If it’s your first cherry blossom season adventure in Japan, there’s a lot of information, and it’s a lot to take in. If you’re starting out with some basic questions, you’re not alone. It can be hard to figure out exactly when the flowers will be turning from little green buds into the iconic pale pink flowers, and how long the whole process will last. So before we get into the nitty-gritty details of 2026, let’s answer a few common queries.

When Do Japan’s Cherry Blossoms Bloom?

The heart of the Japanese “sakura season,” as it’s often known, is from the end of March throughout April, and sometimes into the first days of May, depending on the region and the weather. While cherry blossoms are somewhat rare in Okinawa, they bloom in the warm island climate first, and from there the season slowly moves north, all the way to Hokkaido.

Cherry blossoms forecasts in Japan will sometimes use the term “cherry blossoms bloom” (開花), but this refers to the day the blossoms begin to open, and many buds still remain. The peak comes about 5~7 days after that point, when the cherry blossoms finally reach full bloom. At this point, almost all of the flowers on all the trees in the local area are in bloom, giving the trees a dense cover of pale pink petals. This period, just a few days in any given area, is when parks and gardens are most busy, with famous spots attracting huge crowds from near and far.

It’s easy to get discouraged, thinking the cherry blossoms are only worth seeing during that short peak period, but in reality the early days are worth seeing, and the parks and gardens remain beautiful for about 3-5 days after full bloom, as the petals gradually begin to rain down in picturesque bursts. The length of this last period depends greatly on the weather conditions, if you get lucky with no rain or strong wind, the cherry blossoms may last even longer.

💡 From the day the flowers start to bloom till the day they’re almost all gone, cherry blossom season lasts about 10-14 days in any one area. So even if you don’t go on the exact days when predicted to be the peak of the season, you can still catch glimpses of the flowers!

In mid-January, the Japan Meteorological Corporation (JMC) released its second cherry blossom forecast for 2026, so the Japankuru team went ahead and summed it all up for your convenience. Let’s take a look at some of the details.

Overall, this year’s cherry blossoms are likely to bloom a little earlier than average in almost all regions of Japan, but especially in major cities in central and northern Japan. Many cities are forecasted to bloom about 2~5 days earlier than the average dates of past years.

You can see that the cherry blossom trees in the northern regions of Japan are already beginning to wake from their dormant period. However, this earlier awakening doesn’t actually mean they will bloom any time soon, as they still need warm weather to help the flowers grow. Since northern Japan is still plenty cold, it’s still early days. In Japan’s more southern regions, the trees actually start to awaken later, but as the weather warms up, we’ll see their flowers start bloom earlier, and the blooming season will progress south to north. 🌸

  Kagawa Prefecture is on the northern part of the island of Shikoku, facing Japan's main island and the Seto Inland Sea. It's known for being the smallest prefecture in Japan, by area, but at the same time Kagawa is called the "Udon Prefecture" thanks to its famous sanuki udon. Aside from Kotohiragu Shrine and Ritsurin Garden, the prefecture's small islands are popular, and Kagawa is full of unique destinations, like Angel Road. They say that if you lay eyes on Zenigata Sunae, a huge Kagawa sand painting, you'll never have money troubles ever again.

  Kagoshima Prefecture played a major role in Japan's modernization as a backdrop for famous historical figures like samurais Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, who pushed Japan out of the Edo era and into the Meiji. Because of that, Sengan-en Garden is just one of many historical destinations, and when it comes to attractions Kagoshima has plenty: the active volcano of Sakurajima, popular hot springs Ibusuki Onsen and Kirishima Onsen, World Heritage Site Yakushima Island, even what Japan calls the "island closest to heaven," Amami Oshima.
