Edo Design Book: Beauty of Design in Hinagata Books and Ukiyo-e (exhibition) (Shizuoka) Jan 19, 2021 - Mar 28, 2021

Back in Japan's Edo period and earlier, the articles of clothing that we now like to call "kimono" (着物) weren't special outfits for ceremonies and celebrationsーthey were a part of everyday life. And in those days, the people of Japan often called them "kosode" (小袖). While Western clothing has often focused on form and shape, Japanese clothing has a history of instead emphasising the designs on the back! This exhibition is all about the beauty inherent in the kosode of centuries past, and shows off the many designs the people of Japan wore the display of Edo era ukiyo-e paintings and fashion design pamphlets from the time!
