The Meiji era represented a new start for Japan, at a time when national identity was changing rapidly, and Empress Shoken became the empress of Emperor Meiji in the very first year of his rule (1868). The empress became a popular figure during her reign, supporting the emperor through turbulent times, and earning the adoration of her people. This exhibition includes displays on Empress Shoken's life and her passions, from social welfare to promoting education for women, and brings it to life with a selection of objects from her life, including paintings of court life, and the Western-style gowns that became popular during her time.
