The Tenjin Festival is ranked up there as one of the top three festivals in all of Japan, going back 1,000 years, making it a must-see event for visitors to Osaka in July. The Tenmangu Shrine puts on the festival, so it honors Shinto scholarship deity Sugawara Michizane, with parades "bringing him" through the city. After multiple processions through the streets, and along the rivers in boats, the festival ends with fireworks lighting up the Osaka sky.
